VILHENA
Vilhena is a municipality in the state of Rondonia. Its population, according to IBGE/2010 is 76,187 inhabitants, so the 5th most populous city of Rondonia and the 34th most populous in the Northern Region of Brazil. The city also has the highest HDI in the state of Rondonia and the 9th best of Northern Brazil.
The city is known as Amazon Portal being situated in the gateway to the western Amazon region and is also known as City Climate of Amazon for having a lower temperature, compared to other cities in the North. In times of colonization also received the nickname of Eldorado Amazon. The term referred to the town of Eldorado, according to Indian legend, was made of solid gold.
The name "Vilhena" was named by Rondon in honor of the chief engineer of the Organization of Maranhão Telegraph Public Alvaro de Melo Coutinho Vilhena. This, in 1908, was appointed by the President Director General of Telegraphs.
